When Spring Festival in 2020 coming?

An ancient Chinese saying goes "after the Laba Festival (December 8th in lunar calender), the New Year will began soon".

In 2020, the Spring Festival Eve falls on Jan.  24 and it officially begins on Jan. 25 (Jan. 1st in lunar calender).


Customs

According to the oldest traditions, people follow a day-by-day schedule to make preparations for the upcoming New Year.


On December 23rd (lunar calender)

People will offer sacrifices to the Kitchen God.


On December 24th (lunar calender)

Families throughout China undertake a thorough house cleaning, sweeping out the old in preparation for the New Year.

  


On December 25th (lunar calender)

People will make Tofu. According to Chinese folk beliefs, Jade Emperor will visit the earth to try the Tofu, which means happiness (有福) in Chinese.


On December 26th (lunar calender)

Families will butcher and eat 1 pig. In the past, people could only eat meat during the annual festival.

  


On December 27th (lunar calender)

People start to stock up necessary provisions for the Spring Festival. Everything needed to make offerings to the ancestors, entertain guests, and feed the family over the long holiday must be purchased in advance.

  


On December 28th (lunar calender

Old couplets and paper-cuts from the previous Spring Festival are taken down, and new window decorations, New Year's posters, and auspicious decorations are pasted up.

  


On December 29th (lunar calender)

Steamed bread will be made and offered to ancestors tombs.

  


On December 30th (lunar calender)

New Year's Eve, families will have a reunion dinner, watch the Chinese New Year TV Gala and stay up till 00:00 (Jan. 1 comes).

Various Chinese New Year foods are served on that night such as fish, spring rolls and so on.

  


On Jan. 1 (lunar calender)

Setting off firecrackers to chase off bad spirits is the first thing to do after people get up.  After the first meal, it is the happiest moment for the younger generations, because they can get red envelopes from the older generations.

  


On Jan. 2 (lunar calender)

People will worship the God of Wealth and pray for a better future..

  


On Jan. 3 (lunar calender)

People will visit relatives and other family members.

  


On Jan. 4 (lunar calender)

It's the day to welcome the Wealth God to home, on which people will eat dumplings and set off firecrackers.


On Jan. 7 (lunar calender)

People will use seven kinds of vegetables and rice to make porridge to pray for a long life.


On Jan. 15 (lunar calender)

Rice dumplings and sweet glutinous rice balls are eaten.  It's also called the Latern Festival.
